How Are Cables Armoured for Underground and Industrial Use

From underground installations to demanding industrial environments, cables face far more than electrical challenges. Armouring adds a tough protective layer, helping cables withstand impact, pressure, moisture and other external hazards; keeping the power flowing where it matters most.

How Are Cables Armoured for Underground and Industrial Use

Electrical cables may look relatively simple from the outside, but beneath their outer sheath is a carefully engineered structure designed to protect the conductors carrying electrical power. In demanding environments, cables can encounter heavy loads, impact, vibration, moisture, abrasion, chemicals and even damage from excavation equipment. That is where armoured cables earn their keep.

Built for Maximum Protection

An armoured cable is an electrical cable fitted with an additional protective layer typically made from wires or tapes which could be galvanized steel or aluminium or another suitable metallic material. The type of armour depends on the cable’s application, installation environment and required mechanical protection. It creates a robust barrier between the electrical conductors and external hazards.

Acting as the Shield

Once the conductors are insulated and assembled, a bedding layer may be added to create a stable base for the armour. Armour wires are then applied spirally around the cable, while some designs use helically applied metallic tapes instead. The choice depends on the cable’s voltage, installation environment and mechanical requirements.
Finally, an outer sheath layer protects the cable from moisture, abrasion, chemicals and other external conditions bringing together multiple layers, each designed to keep the cable performing reliably.

Against All Odds Underground

Once a cable goes underground, it may be out of sight, but it is certainly not out of harm’s way.
Buried cables can encounter pressure from surrounding soil, ground movement, construction activity and heavy equipment operating above them. During installation, they can also be exposed to pulling forces and mechanical stress.
Armouring provides an additional level of mechanical protection, helping cables withstand the physical demands associated with underground installation and service.

When Industrial Environments Demand More

Industrial facilities bring their own challenges. Cables may run alongside machinery, through plants and infrastructure, or across areas exposed to vibration, movement, impact and harsh operating conditions. Armoured construction can provide valuable mechanical protection in these environments, helping cables remain reliable as part of the wider electrical system.
